news Chiaravalle Towards UNESCO: Presentation of the Pre-Feasibility Study for the Candidacy of the Chiaravalle Area as a UNESCO World Heritage Site

On Saturday, October 4, 2025, the public presentation of the feasibility study for the nomination of the Chiaravalle area to the UNESCO World Heritage List took place at the evocative Mill of the Abbey of Chiaravalle. This significant event is part of the co-design process promoted by Municipality 5 of the City of Milan, with the active support of institutions, citizens, and local organizations.

The meeting was an opportunity to recount the steps taken so far and to share a project vision that embraces a broader concept of cultural landscape, capable of uniting nature, history, architecture, and community.

Among the key players in this process, BIA – Intangible Cultural Heritage played a central role in drafting the feasibility study for the nomination, carried out in collaboration with Bocconi University. This work laid the foundation for understanding the potential of the territory and outlining strategies for a conscious, sustainable, and participatory nomination.

BIA’s approach focused on the idea of a cultural landscape, going beyond the mere sum of monuments and historic sites. The nomination aims to tell the story of a living territory where nature, history, and community have been intertwined for centuries, creating a unique system of relationships and shared values.

Following the institutional greetings from Councillor Gaia Romani and Municipality 5 President Natale Carapellese, Dr. Angelo Boscarino from BIA and Prof. Piergiacomo Mion dalle Carbonare from Bocconi University spoke about the value of the project and the significance of the nomination from both a cultural and territorial perspective. During the event, the study’s contents and strategies for a sustainable and participatory nomination capable of actively involving all local stakeholders were presented.

The afternoon concluded with a special cultural moment, a theatrical reading dedicated to Antonia Pozzi, a poet deeply connected to Chiaravalle.

This stage represented an important milestone in an ongoing journey, where institutions, associations, universities, and citizens work side by side to give Chiaravalle recognition as a heritage that belongs not only to the past but looks firmly towards the future.
