news Renewing the Castelbuono Civic Museum: a new project to improve accessibility and exhibition design

The Castelbuono Civic Museum in Palermo, a key institution for the preservation and promotion of the region’s historical and artistic heritage, is undergoing a major transformation. BIA, together with a network of specialised partners, is contributing to a comprehensive museum renewal project aimed at enhancing accessibility, inclusivity, and the overall visitor experience.

The initiative focuses on aligning the museum with contemporary museography and international standards for museum accessibility. The project includes a complete redesign of exhibition layouts, visitor pathways, and interpretation tools, ensuring a more intuitive, immersive, and engaging experience for all visitors, including those with diverse sensory needs.

A key component of the project is the 3D scanning of selected artworks from the Museum’s collection. The digital assets generated will support the creation of tactile installations, integrated into the new exhibition design to promote an inclusive museum experience and improve access to cultural content.

The use of advanced digital technologies strengthens the connection between cultural heritage and its audiences, transforming the museum visit into a more interactive and meaningful encounter.

The renewal of the Castelbuono Civic Museum is made possible through a collaborative effort involving Studio Dotdotdot, Gummy Industries, Komedia, Avuelle, and BLP Edizioni. This network brings together creative expertise, technical skills, and innovative technological solutions to deliver a forward-looking project rooted in the museum’s cultural and historical identity.

This ongoing work demonstrates a shared commitment to digital heritage, innovative exhibition practices, and the enhancement of cultural spaces. The renewed Castelbuono Civic Museum aims to become an increasingly accessible, welcoming, and participatory place capable of engaging local communities, visitors, and future generations.
